SAVIGNANO IRPINO AND GREECES - (AV)

In the heart of the Cervaro Valley, in the province of Avellino, it stands Savignano Irpino, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a small Norman center nestled between the green slopes which slope down towards the two hills of Calvario and Tombola, dominated by the Castello Guevara. Further north, towards the border with Puglia, it rises Greci, a town of Greek origin, which after the mid-1400s became a welcoming ground for a garrison of Albanian soldiers who arrived in the wake of their national hero, General Skanderbeg. From this moment on, a commingling phenomenon between Greek culture and Albanian culture that is still very much alive today and which makes Greeks the only municipality in Campania to host an Albanian ethno-linguistic minority: the community arbëreshë.
